How to change user mode of QuickBooks company file?

This guide will help you out to change the user mode of QuickBooks company file.

Occasionally, user who may have already logged in to a QuickBooks company file using the Single User mode might receive the following error prompts on the screen –

Error codes: (-6073, 99001). 

The warning appearing on the screen dictates that the QuickBooks application is unable to open that particular company file. The error has been illustrated in the image below.

How to change user mode of QuickBooks company file

The above-mentioned error occurs with a QuickBooks company file, when it has been simultaneously opened by another user on a different system or account.

If users face the above-mentioned issue, they are recommended to use this guide and change the mode of the company file access from Single to Multi.

Note: A user does not need to worry about the performance of the company, as the QuickBooks company file works absolutely fine in both modes of access.  The file will not face any performance issues in the Multimode.

However, it is to note that there are certain functions that can only be performed in a company file when a user has logged in using the Single user mode.

Therefore, different user modes extend different functionalities to users.

In case, access is required to be given to multiple users to the same company file for a collaborative effort, to be able to work on the same file simultaneously, the user mode has to be changed from Single to Multi.

How to change the company access files from Single-user mode to Multi-user mode?

Follow these steps within your opened company file to change user mode from Single to Multi:

Step 1.

First, the user is required to click on the File option in the top-left corner of the screen in order to open the drop-down menu.

Step 2.

Once the drop-down menu appears under the File option, the user will need to look for an option that says Switch to Multi-user Mode.

The user is required to click on that option.

How to change user mode of QuickBooks company file

Step 3.

After the user has clicked on the Switch to Multi-user Mode from the File menu, a prompt will appear on the screen, mentioning- user will now be able to use the company file in multi-user mode.

After the prompt appears on the screen, the user can simply click on the OK button in the dialog box to complete the change.

After this, multiple users will be able to gain access to the same company file simultaneously for collaborative working projects and the Error will stop appearing on the screen.
